My Mum died of dementia over 20 years ago. And when I first thought of creating a coloring book, I was thinking how much she would have loved an artistic outlet like this to engage her and to make her happy and perhaps help ease her fear in the early years of the disease.
Unfortunately, adult coloring wasn’t really a thing back then (or maybe I just didn’t know about it?), but thinking about my Mum is what led me to choose the bold and easy style with its thicker lines and large areas to color.
When I began sketching, I thought a lot about what young or old people might connect to. And I felt it was little moments and vignettes from around the home. Some of the drawings are based on things I’ve owned in the past or still have in my life – things that hold happy memories or just make me smile.
That’s really where this first coloring book, Cozy Home, came from. I loved creating it, and there will be more to come. Maybe not always in this bold and easy style, but it felt right that this was the one I began with.
