FROM TYPEFACE TO TIMES SQUARE

About 13 years ago, I was deep into the one-year type design program at Cooper Union in NYC when I created a display typeface called Saison Display. It’s a revival and if you’re into type design, you can see a bit of the story here.

I loved working on Saison – especially the shapes of certain letters, like the “S” from the original specimen. I always thought I’d do something more with those forms, but the idea sat in the background for years.

This year, I finally gave it a proper spotlight. I turned Saison’s letterforms into a series of bold, black-and-white artworks and patterns where the shapes take center stage. That series became my Letter Set collection – and one piece, Sunny Day Blue, was chosen for the Visual Art Journal’s September 2025 Times Square Showcase. Not bad for a typeface that started life all those years ago.

Black and white felt right for this collection. Without color fighting for attention, the letters could stand out purely for their shapes – cropped, layered, repeated, and blown up until they almost became abstract forms. The result is graphic, clean, and still full of personality. Of course, I couldn’t resist creating color versions too for added versatility.

For me, Letter Set is a mix of past and present: the type design work I’ve been passionate about for decades, combined with my more recent focus on illustration and surface design. And I can see the collection on everything from prints and phone cases to fabric and home décor – proof that letterforms can live far beyond the page.

And while Sunny Day Blue will have its big Times Square moment, the whole collection is about celebrating type as art in its own right. Sometimes a project needs to wait for the right moment, and sometimes that moment comes with a giant screen in the middle of New York City!

Sunny Day Blue, was chosen for the Visual Art Journal’s Times Square Showcase in September (2025).
